Some would undoubtedly find me strange, but I have found that the best place to find some peace and quiet is atop a parking garage.

So, I am a remote worker, meaning that I visit customers in the downtown core and help them with their business challenges. The tendency would be to hunker down in a coffee house and tap out the work necessary to get my orders put in. But what I have found is I typically will smell like coffee, the coffee is expensive the overall experience simply weighs me down ..

Spring Forward

Spring came and the weather is great. I typically will park atop the garage and then pop down to meet my customers. But then ins tea dog the coffee house I’ll return up here, as I am not, and place some orders, return some emails and generally enjoy the sound of the city without the interruption of people. No one is up here. I don’t pretend to be normal, it’s just who I am.

Come on up .. you never know what you’ll find on garage tops.

Noah, Mason and I share red vines. So tonight we’re sitting watching some Timmy Time and these individually wrapped candies present themselves and so I help the boys open theirs. Tear, strip back the plastic and serve. A feast of red joy -one after another.

After each is complete Noah runs to get another. Tear, strip back the plastic and serve. Then things changed. I snipped a small piece from the end. He didn’t notice.

Another! Tear, strip back the plastic, snip and serve. Another! Tear, strip back the plastic, snip and serve. Another! Tear, strip back the plastic, snip and serve.

Then I paused. Had I just created a miniature mafia? Was I taking my cut? Another godfather is born.

Many parents begin with grandios plans for their children. Naturally I did too. Think about the naming of my kids for example.

Sarah was named after Lady Sarah in Jumping Jack Flash. Whoopi said,”You’re a real lady, Sarah.” and I thought “I want my daughter to be a lady.”

My boys are all named after strong, yet sensitive and intuitive type names – Caleb (Loyal), Noah (from the book the Notebook) and Mason (as the grounded one).

But beginnings rarely equal endings and so now I just hope for simple things like happiness and that when they fall they simply pop down lightly, slow down and move ahead. I want their pain to be minimized.

I know I sound like such a worrisome Dad; this is new for me, but I am certain it will pass – like all things do.

When you are new to a foreign country, or anywhere for that matter, and are just figuring things out it can be terribly lonely. One of the feelings I remember was walking into an empty cafeteria on post and realizing that I had missed dinner and was now going to have to find other arrangements. It’s not the part about missing food that implants this memory into my head, but the reality that I was very, very alone.

I doubt that I am unique and I expect the many people have felt this way before. Presently I am sitting in the cafeteria at Boise State University waiting for someone and the place is silent except for the hum of the refrigerators and the occasion student passing by.

I remember the halls of the barracks in Stuttgart. The walls made of concrete muffled any sound that might otherwise break the silence. It was eire at best. It’s interesting how we all retreat to our corners to huddle in the dark when the night comes. We huddle in groups, and hate to be alone as the darkness of night grips our day. Are we all secretly afraid to be alone, or simply afraid of the dark.

“You’re going to have some stalkers,” she said.

“Anyone can have hope.” I replied.

Why would I share so much about myself on a website. Why would I be so transparent and allow anyone to connect with me including specifying exactly where I am at all times? Well, before you ask the question go and visit your Facebook page and ask yourself how much people know about you. It’s the same stuff.

So why do I?

I think I feel more connected to my community and by way of this I have somehow made myself more accessible. I am a friend to all and enjoy the relationships I share with hundreds of people throughout the valley.

“George gets around.” my friend said on a Facebook post the other day, and it’s true. I do so in my work and in my social life. I get around and share in the living streets of our city, state and planet. It’s fundamental to who I am.
